Latest karaoke craze to help flood victims as fundraiser

Karaoke-crazy Hanoi will be introduced to the latest version of the popular entertainment, all for a good cause.

Rockeoke is set to bring a new twist to the old karaoke format – this times it’s rock, not pop, and it’s with a live band.

Rockeoke has been imported from the Philippines by promoter Jamir Adiong and will make its Hanoi debut on October 22 as part of the #Hanoi1001 events to raise money for flood victims in Central Vietnam.

Entrance is 100,000 VND and takes place at the Green Mango Hotel located on 18 Hang Quat in the Old Quarter.

“From the interest we have had to date, Rockeoke looks like it's going to be huge in Hanoi,” said Jamir. “It’s all the fun of karaoke but with the added thrill of a live band and a live audience. It fulfills all your rockstar dreams."

“Green Mango recognised the potential of it straight away and before we even officially announced the night, we have had people coming to us wanting to put their name down to get up on stage and reserve their favorite rock songs. Karaoke is carried out in front of live audiences in bars and clubs. We’re taking that one step forward and adding a live band too. Rockeoke is getting bigger and bigger in the Philippines and now it's set to conquer Vietnam.”

The Rockeoke Band are all veterans of Hanoi’s live music scene and are ready to unearth some new singing talent.

“The idea immediately appealed to me,” said Green Mango owner Hai Nguyen. “In a private karaoke room you might get to sing half a dozen songs with your friends. But with Rockeoke, you have to make your three minutes on stage really count. It’s an unforgettable experience.”

Rockeoke will also be followed by local band the Hanoi Brass Monkies.

The event forms the opening night of a weekend of music called #hanoi1001: Our Millennium.
