The North Pavilions were designed as minimalist black cubes,[1] and together are capable of producing 16,000 kilowatt-hours (54,594 MBtu) of electricity annually.[6] The outermost layer of the exterior of each pavilion is a curtain wall made of recycled aluminum. These walls contain specially designed "mono-crystalline photovoltaic modules and insulated glass".[26] Convection from radiant solar heat gain causes air to cycle within air cavities covered by the photovoltaic modules. A "highly heat-reflective thermoplastic membrane" is used to waterproof each roof, and helps mitigate the urban heat island effect.[26]
The photovoltaic modules generate electricity to power much of the pavilions' lighting.[26] The North Pavilions are the first Chicago buildings to use building integrated photovoltaic cells, which are a solar energy system incorporated into the building's structural elements.[7] Millennium Park's planners claimed that the pavilions had the first electricity-generating curtain walls in the

Selector Miller has 'one eye' on World Cup

England have named their squad for the forthcoming Twenty20 and one-day international series against Australia.
Paul Collingwood will captain the World Twenty20 champions in a two-match series before Test skipper Andrew Strauss takes over for the seven ODIs.
Warwickshire seamer Chris Woakes is the only uncapped player named, with the first T20 in Adelaide on 12 January.
Craig Kieswetter (T20 series only), Luke Wright, Michael Yardy and James Tredwell are also in the party.
Kevin Pietersen returns to the limited overs set-up after being dropped for last summer's series against Pakistan, while Chris Tremlett returns for the first time in two years.
But Ravi Bopara has been dropped from the squad that beat Pakistan in September with Ian Bell, who missed those matches through injury, coming back in.
Steve Davies retains his place as 50-over wicketkeeper, with Kieswetter still under T20 consideration only, and there is no return yet for Matt Prior - England's Test choice and a player who still wants to play in all international formats.

In a packed winter of cricket, attention will shift to the shorter forms of the game upon the completion of the five-match Ashes series.
England lead 1-0 after two Tests and know Australia must win two of the last three matches to reclaim the urn they lost as tourists in 2009.
Once the Test, T20 and ODI series are over, both teams head to the World Cup in the sub-continent, which starts on 19 February.
"While our focus is currently on retaining the Ashes in Australia we are excited by the prospect of taking on Australia in the limited-overs format as they are amongst the best in the world in the shorter form of the game," said England national selector Geoff Miller.
"We believe we've picked a well balanced squad to cover both the two Twenty20 matches and the ensuing seven-match ODI series against Australia.
"This series will be the ideal lead up to the ICC World Cup which immediately follows the tour of Australia."

Woakes comes into the reckoning after Nottinghamshire fast bowler Stuart Broad was ruled out of the remainder of the tour with a torn abdominal muscle.
"With Stuart Broad ruled out of the series we've needed to bolster our pace bowling stocks and Chris Woakes comes into the squad after knocking on the door for some time," stated Miller.
"Chris will be hungry for his international debut and vying for a place with a number of other quality pace bowlers.
"Craig Kieswetter will join the squad for two Twenty20 matches only before joining the England Lions tour of the West Indies."
England have won five consecutive ODI series since the tour of South Africa last winter and Miller added: "To pit yourself against the number one ranked ODI side in the world over a seven-match series is the perfect preparation for a World Cup."
"We'll be looking to continue the recent run of results the ODI squad has enjoyed over the past 18 months.
Broad faces a tight schedule to recover in time for the World Cup but is likely to be included in the initial squad at least.
England are due to name a provisional 30-man party on 19 December, pared down to 15 a month later.
